Deputy President Kithure Kindiki officially commissioned the Maralal Municipality Market in Samburu West, Samburu County, marking a significant milestone in the Kenya Kwanza administration’s ongoing commitment to local development. The market, constructed at a cost of Sh73 million, is part of a broader national effort aimed at improving the livelihoods of small-scale traders across the country.
The funding for the market was shared between the national government and the county, with Sh50 million provided by the national government and Sh23 million contributed by the Samburu County Government. This modern facility is designed to offer traders a dignified working environment, complete with essential amenities such as cold rooms for perishables, dedicated spaces for lactating mothers, playing areas for children, and free ICT hubs for the youth.
During his address at the commissioning ceremony, Kindiki highlighted the government’s pledge to support small-scale traders and entrepreneurs, noting that the market is a tangible result of the promises made during the election campaign. “When President William Ruto and I sought your votes, we promised to construct modern markets for mama mbogas and other small traders. This market is part of fulfilling that promise,” said Kindiki.
The Deputy President also emphasized the government’s focus on equitable development across all regions of Kenya. He assured the residents of Samburu that the government remains committed to ensuring that no part of the country is left behind in the pursuit of socio-economic growth.
In addition to the market, Kindiki inspected the ongoing construction of the Yamo Dam in the county, a key project aimed at providing a reliable water source for the area. He revealed that the dam, which has already absorbed Sh2.2 billion in investment, will be completed within a year, with only piping and reticulation remaining.
Moreover, Kindiki confirmed that the government has allocated funds to begin the tarmacking of the Maralal-Baragoi road, a vital infrastructure project expected to enhance connectivity and development in the region. The installation of a new power sub-station in Rumuruti is also underway, which will improve electricity supply in Maralal and surrounding areas.
This series of initiatives showcases the government’s dedication to uplifting communities in Samburu and ensuring balanced development throughout the country.
