Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced scheduled power interruptions across four counties on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, as part of its ongoing network maintenance program. The affected counties include Kisumu, Kisii, Nyeri, and Kiambu, with outages expected to occur between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in specific areas.
In Kisumu, residents in Kogonyarea, Bandani, and Loafter Bread areas, along with adjacent customers, will experience the outage for the full eight-hour window.
Nyeri County will also witness disruptions in several areas, including Kyeni Mission Hospital, Makutano Market, Njeruri Market, Mufu Market, Kiaragana Market, and nearby locations. Similarly, in Kisii, affected zones include Nyakoiba Secondary, Nyabioto Market, Ibecho Market, Ibencho Airtel Booster, Nyakenyerere Secondary and Dispensary, Eburi Market, Nyansara Market, and Openda Market.
In Kiambu, power cuts will hit parts of Marige, HaKariu, Gathuruini Secondary, Githioro, Gathugu, Kiamoria, Mount Moriah, and Thuita.
Kenya Power explained that these planned outages are essential to facilitate system maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. Such operations aim to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the national electricity grid.
The company emphasized that power interruptions—both planned and unplanned—are inevitable for several reasons. Scheduled outages often support network expansion, new customer connections, and critical maintenance. Additionally, infrastructure projects like road construction may necessitate temporary disconnections.
Unplanned outages, however, may result from equipment failures, extreme weather, vandalism, or even animal interference. Notably, in June 2016, a monkey caused a nationwide blackout after tampering with equipment at the Gitaru Power Station, knocking out over 180 megawatts from the grid.
Kenya Power urges affected customers to plan accordingly and apologizes for any inconvenience caused. The utility also reassures the public of its commitment to delivering reliable electricity and improving service delivery through regular upgrades and repairs. Customers are encouraged to stay informed through official KPLC communication channels.
