Several areas in Nairobi and Siaya counties will experience scheduled power interruptions on Friday, as Kenya Power (KPLC) undertakes planned maintenance and network upgrades.
In Nairobi’s Westlands area, power will be disrupted from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, affecting locations such as Muthithi Road, Ojijo Road, Broad Wall Mall, Ovacado, Fruity Fruits, Bank of Baroda, Lagaisa House, Golden Trip Hotel, Hypermatt, and adjacent customers.
Similarly, in Siaya County, residents of Tingwangi and Anduro will experience power disruptions during the same hours. Affected areas include Randago, Murmalanga, Tingwangi, Nyajuok, Ojando, Matera Secondary, Achae Rach, Upanda, and surrounding customers.
KPLC conducts both planned and unplanned power interruptions for various reasons, including maintenance, network upgrades, fault repairs, and new customer connections.
Scheduled outages allow engineers to perform essential maintenance to improve power reliability and efficiency. Additionally, infrastructure projects such as road construction may necessitate temporary power line relocations.
On the other hand, unplanned power outages occur due to unexpected faults, equipment failures, vandalism, and extreme weather conditions. Storms and heavy rains can damage power lines, while wildlife can also cause disruptions.
One of the most unusual cases occurred in June 2016, when a monkey climbed onto the roof of the Gitaru Power Station and accidentally tripped a transformer. This triggered a chain reaction, leading to a nationwide blackout and the loss of over 180 megawatts of power. While such incidents are rare, they highlight the vulnerabilities of power infrastructure to external factors.
Kenya Power urges customers in the affected areas to prepare for the scheduled outages and to use alternative power sources where necessary. Consumers are also encouraged to report power faults and vandalism cases to ensure a stable and efficient electricity supply.
For updates on power restoration and future maintenance schedules, customers can visit the Kenya Power website or follow their official social media channels.
