The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has intensified efforts to enhance inter-agency collaboration, aiming to improve the efficiency of justice delivery across Kenya. Recognizing the importance of synergy among key players in the criminal justice system, the ODPP seeks to address systemic challenges that hinder the timely dispensation of justice.
Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Tom Imbali emphasized the significance of a cooperative approach among justice stakeholders, stressing that collaboration, rather than competition, is crucial for ensuring fair and efficient justice for all. “As ODPP, we believe in collaboration, not competition or suspicion. Working together will ensure justice is served efficiently and fairly,” he stated.
Imbali made these remarks during his official visit to the Narok ODPP office, where he engaged in discussions with judiciary officials, including Narok Chief Magistrate Jared Nyaberi, and the county security team, led by Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia. The dialogue focused on key challenges facing the criminal justice system, with particular attention to the disappearance of accused persons, absenteeism of witnesses in court, and congestion in prisons.
During the meeting, Imbali, accompanied by Narok ODPP in-charge Gitonga Murang’a, underscored the importance of stakeholder feedback in improving decision-making processes and fostering mutual support among agencies. He also reiterated the need for ODPP staff to maintain high standards of ethics, honesty, and confidentiality in their operations to bolster public trust in the justice system.
Commissioner Lotiatia reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the ODPP by ensuring seamless coordination between security agencies and prosecutors. He pledged to facilitate the timely sharing of case files and the availability of witnesses in court, a move aimed at reducing case delays and improving conviction rates.
One of the key resolutions from the meeting was the initiation of a prison decongestion exercise. This measure aims to alleviate overcrowding in correctional facilities by expediting case processing and implementing alternative sentencing options where appropriate.
The ODPP plays a vital role in the justice system, including making decisions on charges, determining appropriate charges in criminal cases, and advising government ministries, departments, and state corporations on legal matters related to criminal law and international relations. By strengthening inter-agency collaboration, the ODPP is positioning itself as a key driver in ensuring that justice is not only done but seen to be done efficiently and fairly for all Kenyans.
