Former Kenya Simbas head coach Paul Odera has been appointed as the new Director of Rugby at the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU). This strategic appointment seeks to enhance rugby development and performance at all levels, ensuring a strong foundation for future growth and success.
Odera, a renowned figure in Kenyan rugby, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Having served as the head coach of the national U20 team, Odera led the squad to the 2019 World Rugby U20 Trophy, an achievement that showcased his ability to develop young talent and foster a competitive spirit. His leadership has been pivotal in nurturing emerging players, laying a solid foundation for the future of Kenyan rugby.
Though excited about the new role, Odera expressed a sense of apprehension regarding the enormity of the task ahead. “I look forward to achieving the three-legged African stool (borrowed from Nobel Prize Laureate Wangari Mathai),” he said, referring to the three key pillars that will guide his approach in the role. These pillars are transformational leadership, science and data-driven planning, and decision-making — all of which will be crucial in driving progress and ensuring the sustainable development of the sport.
Odera’s appointment as a World Rugby Mentor and Educator has equipped him with invaluable insights into rugby development, strengthening his ability to support the KRU’s vision of success. As the new Director of Rugby, he is tasked with developing a unique Kenyan rugby identity, rooted in the fundamentals of the game while focusing on the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological aspects of rugby.
KRU Chairman, Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai, praised Odera’s vast contribution to Kenyan rugby over the years, noting his roles as a player, captain, and coach at various levels, including the national teams. “He is a dedicated rugby professional and I welcome him to his new position. He will be instrumental in executing the KRU Strategic Plan 2024–2028, which was adopted at last year’s Annual General Meeting,” said Mutai.
The appointment of Paul Odera comes at a crucial time for Kenyan rugby, with the KRU working tirelessly to grow the game. KRU CEO Thomas Odundo echoed this sentiment, highlighting Odera’s experience as a school teacher, which will be invaluable in shaping rugby development programs and pathways for players at all levels.
As Kenya embarks on a new chapter in its rugby journey, Paul Odera’s leadership and expertise are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the sport.
