President William Ruto has committed Sh850 million to connect at least 10,000 households in Nyeri to electricity within the next seven months. This pledge, made during his visit to Nyeri Town Constituency on Saturday, is part of his government’s broader initiative to increase electricity access in rural areas. Speaking to residents, the President emphasized that while progress has been made, certain parts of Nyeri still lack reliable power access, and the government is determined to address this gap.
The President further promised that an additional Sh600 million would be allocated by the end of the year to ensure that electricity reaches every home in the region. This funding is aimed at fulfilling one of Ruto’s key campaign promises to bring electricity to all Kenyans, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.
In addition to the Nyeri project, Ruto’s five-day tour of the Mount Kenya region has seen a series of pledges related to electricity connectivity. On April 2, he launched a last-mile electricity connectivity project in Meru County, which will provide 20,000 households with access to the national grid at a cost of Sh1.8 billion. A separate project in Meru, valued at Sh1.2 billion, aims to connect another 10,000 households. On April 3, in Kangema, Murang’a County, he announced over Sh1 billion in funding to connect more than 16,000 households to electricity.
Ruto emphasized that electricity should not be a privilege for the wealthy, but a fundamental service available to all Kenyans. He also highlighted the importance of working with local leaders to prioritize areas that are still in darkness, ensuring that the government’s efforts are aligned with the needs of residents.
Beyond electricity, the President also pledged the construction of Gakira Market and 16 other markets across Murang’a County to support farmers. These markets will be equipped with water, electricity, and cold storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses and improve the sale of agricultural produce.
With these commitments, President Ruto aims to make significant strides in improving the livelihoods of rural Kenyans through better infrastructure and access to basic services.
