Widows in Migori County have been given a new lease on life through the Widows Empowerment Programme, a transformative initiative championed by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and team leader Victor Ayugi. Over the weekend, as the world marked International Women’s Day 2025, the programme provided widows in West Sakwa Ward, Awendo Constituency, with essential skills and resources to build sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative focused on financial stability and community empowerment, ensuring that widows gain the confidence to shape a brighter future for themselves and their families. Through structured sessions, the widows received practical knowledge and support designed to enhance their financial independence and social integration.
The programme extended its outreach to other groups, including the Godjope Widows in Godjope Ward, Vumilia Widows in Kwa Ward, and Talented Widows in Kakrao Ward. These engagements reinforced the commitment to empowering women by fostering economic resilience and social support structures across the county.
This year’s Widows Empowerment Programme aligns with the global theme of International Women’s Day 2025: “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.” By equipping widows with essential skills and resources, the initiative underscores the power of investing in women’s resilience and potential. The programme not only provides opportunities but also strengthens communities, fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
Kenyans joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8, a day dedicated to recognizing women’s achievements and advocating for gender equality. Since its inception in 1911, International Women’s Day has served as a focal point for the women’s rights movement, addressing issues such as reproductive rights, gender equality, and violence against women.
Recognized by the United Nations in 1975, International Women’s Day continues to honor the courage and determination of ordinary women who have played pivotal roles in shaping societies. The symbolic colors of the day purple, green, and white represent justice, hope, and purity, respectively.
Through initiatives like the Widows Empowerment Programme, the message of International Women’s Day is amplified, demonstrating that investing in women is key to accelerating progress and fostering a more equitable society.
