President William Ruto has emphasized the critical role of technology in ensuring national security, stating that its proper application could address some of the most pressing challenges facing societies today. Speaking at the Second Mashariki Cooperation Conference in Naivasha, which brought together over 60 intelligence and security leaders from across Africa and the world, Ruto urged intelligence agencies to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their operations to stay ahead of emerging threats.
Ruto acknowledged the numerous potential uses of technology but highlighted its pivotal role in national security and stability. He stressed that AI and digital tools should not only be used to deliver public services but also to combat security threats and enhance the stability of nations and regions. By incorporating these technologies into intelligence work, governments can gain a strategic advantage in preventing and responding to risks that could jeopardize national security.
“I want to ask all of you to make sure that the digital space, especially artificial intelligence, becomes part of our intelligence,” Ruto said. He underlined that technology, if applied correctly, can contribute significantly to solving societal issues, fostering peace, and ensuring development. However, the President also emphasized that this requires commitment and responsibility from both governments and security sectors to make technology work for security purposes.
The President further explained that stability is a key driver of progress. Without it, economic growth and national prosperity are severely hindered. As such, Ruto called for intelligence-led decision-making to ensure more accurate and effective interventions in national security efforts. He also noted that with technology, governments can better predict, prevent, and respond to potential threats, thus creating an environment conducive to both security and development.
