A Sh12.4 billion agricultural initiative targeting over 625,000 farming households across 26 counties has been launched to enhance rural incomes, improve productivity, and increase market access. Spearheaded by Heifer International, the Practice for Change (P4C) Signature Programme is set to run for seven years, offering inclusive and sustainable rural development support.
Speaking during the launch, Heifer International President and CEO Surita Sandosham emphasized the programme’s commitment to smallholder farmers, especially women and youth. “This programme reflects our shared commitment to inclusive rural development, built on the strength and potential of Kenya’s farmers,” she said. “We believe that when women thrive, families and communities are stronger. When youth are engaged, innovation and opportunity grow.”
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe hailed the initiative, calling for strategic partnerships to drive transformation in the sector. “Through efforts like Heifer International’s, we hope to significantly and sustainably improve rural livelihoods and increase living incomes,” he said.
P4C will focus on strengthening agricultural value chains—particularly poultry, dairy, red meat, and horticulture. It will offer training in agribusiness, improve governance and financial management, and enhance access to finance, digital tools, and extension services. The programme also integrates climate-smart practices and clean energy solutions under the Power, Water and Internet initiative, helping reduce post-harvest losses caused by energy poverty.
Heifer International Kenya Country Director Clarice Bugo-Kionge said the project aligns with the national Vision 2030 plan by promoting modern, commercially viable agriculture. “Our focus on strengthening value chains directly supports Vision 2030’s goal of transforming agriculture,” she stated.
In addition, the initiative will expand Heifer’s work into pastoralist regions and promote youth engagement through the AYuTe (Agriculture, Youth and Technology) initiative. This will provide young innovators with mentorship, funding, and tools to transform agricultural value chains and create employment.
The programme will also enhance financial inclusion via Heifer Impact Capital, addressing financing challenges faced by farmer-owned enterprises. Ultimately, P4C aims to build a resilient, profitable, and inclusive agricultural sector in Kenya.
