Traders in Suswa, Narok County, are set to experience a major transformation in their livelihoods as the government nears completion of the modern Suswa Market, now 95 percent done. For years, local traders operated under harsh environmental conditions scorching sun, relentless rains, squelching mud, and choking dust causing health risks and damaging their goods. Many could not afford indoor spaces, pushing them to persevere in open-air trading spaces.
The Suswa modern market, part of President William Ruto’s BETA plan, is one of ten markets earmarked for construction in Narok under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development’s Economic Stimulus Program (ESP). It is envisioned as a beacon of hope for over 200 traders, especially women and youth, offering a dignified space to grow their businesses.
The market boasts inclusive features such as a ramp for the elderly and people with disabilities, a lactation room, ICT hub, cold storage facilities for perishables, a 30,000-cubic-metre water tank, a kitchen, an eatery, and a social hall. These additions aim to promote digital trade, hygiene, and food security while creating ready markets for agricultural produce.
Local residents have already felt the economic ripple effects of the project. Pauline Teka, a security officer at the site, said the job enabled her to provide for her children and start a small business. Another worker, Pauline Karanja, began a water-selling venture from her earnings, praising the government for creating employment opportunities.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, during a recent tour, emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and improving grassroots lives. His deputies echoed the sentiment, hailing the market as a symbol of President Ruto’s inclusive leadership.
Community members like elder James Oleparikire and resident Gideon Naadokila expressed gratitude, saying the facility will uplift women, youth, and families. They also appealed for more support, including shaded areas for livestock traders.
As the project nears completion, optimism runs high in Suswa. The modern market stands as a testament to the power of inclusive development, aiming to turn past struggles into sustainable success for the people of Narok.
