First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has upheld her promise of supporting needy children by donating shoes to students of Matuga Girls High School and Mwachome Primary School. The donation, made Friday, aligns with the First Lady’s commitment to empowering communities and fostering educational access for vulnerable children.
The initiative was a continuation of pledges made during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale County. Collaborating with the Aga Khan University Hospital, Mama Rachel Ruto has focused on alleviating challenges that impede children’s education, including the lack of basic necessities like footwear.
Representing the First Lady at the event were Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani and Mary Muinde, the Chief of Staff to the First Lady. In their addresses, the representatives emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive education. “This donation is not just about shoes. It’s about giving children dignity, confidence, and a chance to focus on their studies without distractions,” said Mary Muinde.
The visit was also marked by the launch of Kitchen Gardens, an initiative aimed at supporting school feeding programs. This endeavor ties into the government’s goal of achieving 100% school enrollment, retention, and transition rates. Kitchen Gardens provide a sustainable source of nutritious food, ensuring students receive at least one wholesome meal per day.
Governor Achani lauded the initiative, highlighting its role in addressing food insecurity and its ripple effect on education outcomes. “When children are well-fed, they can concentrate better in class, and this improves academic performance. It’s a holistic approach to education,” she noted.
The event attracted several key figures, reflecting the collaborative nature of the initiatives. Among those present were Mangale Munga Chiforomondo, Kwale County Deputy Director of Education Robert Mukombe, and Leader of Majority in Kwale County Assembly, Hanifa Badi Mwajirani.
These leaders expressed gratitude for the First Lady’s unwavering support and urged local stakeholders to champion similar projects to complement government efforts.
Mama Rachel Ruto’s initiatives underscore her dedication to uplifting vulnerable populations, particularly in education. By addressing barriers such as lack of shoes and hunger, these programs aim to create equitable opportunities for all students.
The First Lady’s contributions, combined with the unwavering support of local leaders and stakeholders, promise a brighter future for Kwale County’s children.
