The U.S.-based philanthropic organization Ford Foundation has firmly denied allegations of financing the ongoing anti-government protests in Kenya. The accusations came from the Kenyan government through a letter penned by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei, which raised concerns about the foundation’s recent funding activities in the country.
The letter, addressed to Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, outlined that between April 2023 and May 2024, the foundation provided a total of USD 5.78 million (approximately Ksh.752 million) to various non-state entities in Kenya. The recipients included Africa Uncensored Limited, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Transparency International. The communication from PS Sing’Oei implied a potential link between this funding and the perceived rise in anti-government demonstrations, prompting the state to seek clarity and accountability from the Ford Foundation.
In response, the Ford Foundation issued a statement on its website, reiterating its commitment to transparency and the advancement of civil society causes globally. The foundation acknowledged the receipt of the letter from the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reassured the public of its adherence to stringent grant-making protocols.
“As a charitable foundation with a global presence, our grantmaking is transparent and readily available on our website, www.fordfoundation.org. This includes a database showing where our funds go, as well as highlights from our rich history in East Africa and around the world,” the Ford Foundation stated.
The foundation emphasized its dedication to supporting initiatives that promote social justice and equitable development. It also affirmed its stance on peaceful advocacy, rejecting any actions or speech that incite hate or violence against institutions, individuals, or communities.
“While we continue to acknowledge the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country, we repudiate any actions or speech that are hateful or advocate violence against any institution, individual, or community,” the foundation added.
The Ford Foundation further highlighted its long-standing commitment to the region, aiming to build a legacy that enables Kenyans to unlock and tap into new opportunities. The organization remains steadfast in its mission to support civil society and foster social justice, both in Kenya and globally.
