Colonel (Rtd) John Hamlyn Bryant, the inaugural Adjutant of the 3 Kenya Rifles (3 KR), visited the unit on Monday at Lanet Barracks in Nakuru County. Accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Dorethea Leslie Bryant, their son Brigadier Oliver Bryant currently the UK Defence Advisor to Kenya and three granddaughters, the visit was a momentous occasion reflecting on the legacy of the Kenya Army’s oldest battalion.
The visit commenced with Colonel (Rtd) Bryant inspecting a quarter guard before laying a wreath at the Unit’s Narung’ombe Regimental Monument. The act was a solemn tribute to the officers and service members who have safeguarded Kenya’s territorial integrity through various operations. During a ceremonial parade, the soldiers of 3 KR, known as “Scarlet,” proudly displayed their regimental colours, underscoring the Unit’s rich tradition.
A tour of the Unit’s museum followed, where Colonel (Rtd) Bryant explored artefacts chronicling 3 KR’s formation and historical contributions to Kenya’s security. The museum’s exhibits showcased the Unit’s role in key operations, including the Battle of Narung’ombe, Operation Linda Nchi, and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Ndung’u, the current Commanding Officer of 3 KR, acknowledged the solid foundation laid by predecessors like Colonel (Rtd) Bryant. “The high standards and integrity established by our former leaders continue to guide the Unit’s principles and operations today,” he noted.
The visit highlighted the enduring bond between past and present members of 3 KR. Ambassador Colonel (Rtd) Elijah Matibo, also a former Adjutant, joined the gathering alongside other senior officers and service members.
3 Kenya Rifles has been instrumental in regional security, evolving from its early days into a critical Unit of the Kenya Army. The visit by Colonel (Rtd) Bryant, a figure who shaped the Unit’s early development, rekindled memories and emphasized the importance of preserving the Unit’s heritage for future generations.
This event stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of service and dedication that defines 3 Kenya Rifles.
