Mercy Cherono, once a shining star in Kenyan long-distance running, has been on a remarkable journey filled with challenges, personal milestones, and a determined pursuit of a comeback. After disappearing from the track and public eye for a couple of years, Cherono is now gearing up for a triumphant return to athletics.
Cherono’s hiatus was marked by significant personal and professional developments. She took a refresher course as a National Police officer and later went on maternity leave in 2023. In 2024, she resumed her training, albeit with limited competition during that period. Reflecting on her journey, Cherono has expressed gratitude and optimism as she prepares for a busy season ahead.
The athlete recently participated in the National Police Cross-Country Championships in Ngong, where she finished eighth with a time of 35:03. Prior to this, she competed at the Kericho Betika Cross Country and the Bingwafest in Eldoret at the close of the 2024 season. Despite the challenges of training and balancing her responsibilities, Cherono remains steadfast in her commitment to the sport she loves.
Cherono has her sights set on the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, aiming to revive the glory days of her career. With renewed energy and determination, she hopes to add to her impressive track record, which includes a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 5000m. Her earlier achievements also include gold medals at the 2008 and 2010 World Junior Championships, as well as a silver medal in the 5000m in 2010. She was a dominant force in cross-country running, securing the junior title at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships and a silver medal in the 2009 edition.
Cherono’s return to competitive running comes after a challenging 2024 season, during which she struggled with the physical demands of training. However, she views her recent performances as a crucial part of her preparation for the upcoming season. The cross-country races, in particular, have helped her build endurance and refine her skills, setting the stage for a strong comeback.
In addition to her athletic endeavors, Cherono participated in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where she narrowly missed a podium finish, placing fourth in the women’s 5000m final. This performance demonstrated her resilience and determination to compete at the highest level.
As Cherono embarks on this new chapter, she acknowledges the challenges she has faced and the lessons learned along the way. Her journey is a testament to her unwavering passion for athletics and her determination to overcome obstacles. With her eyes firmly set on the 2025 World Championships, Cherono is poised to make a significant impact on the track once again.
