A Kentucky man, Dominic Weaver, was arrested in Miami after evading child support payments for a decade. Weaver, 47, had been on the run for ten years, accumulating a significant debt in unpaid child support, reportedly totaling between $114,000 and $120,000. He was apprehended as he disembarked from a cruise ship, marking the conclusion of his vacation. The arrest was the result of a coordinated effort between detectives from the Jefferson County Child Support Division and Miami police.
Weaver had been avoiding his child support obligations for years, and authorities say he never made any payments. He was facing multiple child support cases, with four separate claims against him. Two additional cases were reportedly in the process of being prepared for indictment, which could lead to more felony charges. In 2019, Weaver’s name appeared on a public list of parents who were failing to meet their child support responsibilities, at that time owing over $91,000. By 2021, his debt had grown to more than $99,000.
The case is being described by Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell as one of the most egregious child support violations he has encountered. O’Connell revealed that Weaver had been sentenced to five years of probation in 2019 after being convicted of flagrant nonsupport. However, due to his continued failure to pay and his attempt to flee, O’Connell intends to push for the revocation of Weaver’s probation and seek a new sentence of four years in state prison.
The arrest of Dominic Weaver highlights the lengths some individuals go to avoid their financial responsibilities, particularly in cases involving child support. His case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their obligations, especially when children’s well-being is at stake. The authorities’ ability to track down and arrest a fugitive on the run for such an extended period reflects the determination of law enforcement in these types of cases.
