Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has clarified that he has no issues with his successor, Kithure Kindiki. In a recent statement, Gachagua emphasized that he is solely focused on his current endeavors and is not concerned with Kindiki’s position. Speaking on Tuesday, he affirmed that while he served as Deputy President, his role was as an elected official, and as such, he does not feel the need to comment on Kindiki, who is an appointee.
“I don’t want to talk about Kindiki. I am an elected leader and cannot talk about an appointee. I have no problem with him. I am doing my own things,” Gachagua stated, further distancing himself from any discussions about his former colleague. His comments came after a turbulent period in which Gachagua faced impeachment allegations, which were eventually cleared by the National Assembly and Senate.
Kindiki’s rise to the Deputy President’s role came after Gachagua’s tenure, following President William Ruto’s decision to appoint him. Gachagua’s position was later filled by Kindiki, who had been serving as the Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary. Upon being confirmed by the National Assembly, Kindiki was sworn in as the new Deputy President, a significant change in the political landscape.
Kindiki, however, recently acknowledged that despite the impeachment saga, his relationship with Gachagua has remained unchanged. In a public statement, Kindiki noted that their friendship and professional rapport continue to be strong, with both men maintaining a mutual respect. “Our relationship is the same as it was. We’re good people, good friends,” Kindiki remarked.
While reflecting on Gachagua’s term as Deputy President, Kindiki refrained from comparing himself to his predecessor. He emphasized that it would be inappropriate to start drawing parallels between the two, as each leader’s tenure is unique. Additionally, Kindiki addressed the impeachment process, stating that it was comprehensive, involving all arms of government. He defended the process and assured that if any corrections were necessary, the constitution provides a clear path for addressing grievances.
The political journey of Gachagua and Kindiki has been intertwined with President Ruto’s decision in the 2022 general elections. While Gachagua was chosen as the Deputy President, Kindiki was appointed to head the Interior docket. Their collaboration has played a crucial role in shaping the current administration’s leadership dynamics, with both men maintaining their distinct roles in government.
Gachagua’s remarks reflect his commitment to focusing on his work while leaving the past behind, fostering a sense of stability in the political environment.
