Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns that some leaders are hesitant to be publicly associated with him, fearing victimization and potential interference in their businesses. Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Gachagua noted an increase in individuals reaching out to him privately to share their views on the way forward for the Mt. Kenya region.
“The number of people willing to come and see me is growing, but many are scared to be seen with me because of the fear of their businesses being interfered with,” Gachagua revealed.
He highlighted that these individuals come from diverse backgrounds, including church leaders, professionals, and businesspeople, and have been using various channels like meetings, emails, WhatsApp, and text messages to communicate their concerns.
Gachagua admitted that the overwhelming volume of feedback has delayed his initial goal of completing consultations by January 31st. “I had hoped to report to the people by the end of January, but the number of views coming in has made it challenging,” he said.
Among the issues raised in the consultations is the dissatisfaction with the decision to join President William Ruto’s party without an independent political vehicle. Gachagua stated that many feel this move weakened their bargaining power and expressed regret over the choice.
“Many people believe we made a serious mistake joining the party without our political vehicle. They feel we need to negotiate better in the future,” he added.
Addressing rumors about potential political endorsements, Gachagua clarified that his meetings are not meant to signal support for any particular candidate or party. “I am a people-centred leader, and I listen to the people. My meetings do not amount to endorsing anyone. The people will decide regardless,” he emphasized.
Quoting the late Kenneth Matiba, Gachagua reaffirmed his belief in people-driven leadership: “Let the people decide.” He reassured both supporters and critics that his doors remain open to all, irrespective of their political affiliations.
Gachagua promised to provide a comprehensive report on the consultations soon and hinted that he might request additional time if necessary. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to engaging with stakeholders and addressing the concerns of the Mt. Kenya region.
