Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has set his sights on securing 15 million votes in the 2027 general election, a bold ambition that reflects his growing political influence, particularly in the Mt Kenya region. During a live interview on vernacular radio stations, Gachagua emphasized that this substantial vote base, coupled with a winning margin of 6 million, would ensure that no rival could challenge the results in the Supreme Court, as occurred in the highly contested 2022 election.
Gachagua’s strategy hinges on building a broad and inclusive political coalition. He pointed to ongoing consultations with regional leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper Party and Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-K, as crucial to securing key voting blocs across the country. His focus is not only on Mt Kenya but also on Ukambani and Western Kenya, two regions with significant voting populations.
The former DP is confident that the unity of these regions will create a formidable force capable of delivering a decisive victory. He believes that securing 15 million votes would be a game-changer in the political landscape, ensuring that his camp has a clear mandate without the legal challenges that marred the 2022 elections. Gachagua’s remarks underscore his intent to build a coalition that spans Kenya’s diverse ethnic and political landscape, positioning him as a key player in the 2027 race.
Reflecting on the 2022 election, Gachagua noted that President William Ruto’s victory was largely attributed to his strong performance in Mt Kenya, which delivered nearly 47% of the national vote. He is confident that he can replicate this success in 2027, especially with the support of regional leaders like Kalonzo and Wamalwa, who could help galvanize voters from their respective regions.
Gachagua also called on the Luhya community, primarily based in Western Kenya, to join his political camp, asserting that their unity would make it easier to secure victory in 2027. “With their support, victory will be much easier,” he stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Mulembe nation in his 2027 plans.
As Gachagua continues to consolidate his base in Mt Kenya and extend his reach to other key regions, his aspirations for 15 million votes reflect the larger political shifts taking place ahead of the 2027 election. With his growing alliances and clear focus on a united front, Gachagua’s camp is poised to be a formidable contender in the next presidential race.
