Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s strategic meetings at his Wamunyoro residence have sent ripples through Kenya’s political landscape. His Tuesday meeting with Nakuru County Assembly MCAs has highlighted a bold game plan to consolidate his influence in the Mt Kenya region as the 2027 elections loom.
The gathering, attended mostly by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MCAs, underscores Gachagua’s intent to solidify grassroots support. While President William Ruto focuses on Western Kenya, touring Kakamega, Vihiga, and Busia counties, Gachagua has turned his attention inward, seeking to unify the Mt Kenya bloc.
Insiders reveal that Gachagua plans to meet MCAs from all ten Mt Kenya counties over the next week before unveiling a political party by month’s end. During a church service in Nanyuki on Sunday, he announced that the party would be introduced within 14 days, a move expected to reshape regional politics.
Nakuru MCAs appraised Gachagua on local socioeconomic issues, with the former DP stating on his X page, “The Members of the County Assembly are the elected leaders who spend most of their time with the electorate at their grassroots level; therefore, their voice is a true reflection of what the common Wananchi stands for.”
Naivasha MP Jane Kihara, who accompanied the MCAs, described the meetings as part of an effort to unify the Mt Kenya region. “The agenda is to unite the region so that as a people we can get back our respect as we move forward,” Kihara said.
In the coming days, Gachagua is set to meet MCAs from Laikipia, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, and Kiambu counties, extending his consultations to other Mt Kenya East counties. Embakasi North MP James Gakuya defended the forums as consultations aimed at fostering regional unity.
With Gachagua’s diary kept tightly guarded, politicians seeking to align themselves with his camp have scrambled to secure positions ahead of his party’s unveiling. Analysts view this as a signal of a potential political realignment within Mt Kenya, as leaders rally to his banner in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua’s calculated moves reflect his ambition to establish a stronghold in Mt Kenya, ensuring the region speaks with one voice. As his meetings continue, the political future of Mt Kenya hangs in the balance, with the former DP emerging as a key player in the unfolding narrative.
