Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment as Deputy President has dramatically reshaped Mt Kenya’s political dynamics, sparking a fierce contest for dominance in the region. With loyalties shifting and rivalries reignited, Gachagua faces a formidable challenge in reclaiming his influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Once seen as the undisputed kingpin of Mt Kenya following Uhuru Kenyatta’s exit from active politics, Gachagua’s political star has dimmed under President William Ruto’s administration. The impeachment exposed fractures within Mt Kenya leadership and intensified competition for the region’s political future.
Ruto-Uhuru Bromance Complicates Matters
President Ruto’s surprise meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta in Gatundu further complicated Gachagua’s position. Speculation is rife that Ruto might bring Uhuru’s allies, including his brother Muhoho Kenyatta, into his administration. This move, viewed as a strategy to consolidate support in Mt Kenya, has left Gachagua politically isolated.
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi dismissed Gachagua’s influence, citing a lack of evidence of his engagements with Uhuru. Similarly, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo criticized Gachagua for personalizing his fallout with Ruto, cautioning him against dragging the region into individual disputes.
Divisions Emerge Within Mt Kenya
While Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has rallied behind Gachagua, describing him as the people’s Deputy President, others have called for unity to avoid division. Kahiga emphasized that the region remains firmly behind Gachagua, warning Ruto against sidelining Mt Kenya voters.
On the other hand, political analysts argue that disagreements within Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) threaten to derail Gachagua’s resurgence. Leaders allied to Gachagua have expressed dissatisfaction with Ruto’s leadership, accusing him of ignoring the region. Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa urged Ruto to respect Mt Kenya, suggesting a by-election would reveal the region’s steadfast support for Gachagua.
The Kenyatta Factor
The Kenyatta family’s stance remains critical in Mt Kenya politics. Despite their low profile, their influence endures, with political analyst Macharia Munene suggesting Gachagua should seek reconciliation with the Kenyattas. Such a move, Munene argued, could help consolidate dynastic support for Gachagua, boosting his regional standing.
Conversely, some analysts believe Gachagua’s populist appeal as a defender of ordinary citizens could counterbalance the Kenyatta dynasty’s influence. His recent efforts to position himself as a champion of Mt Kenya’s collective interests have resonated with voters feeling betrayed by Ruto’s government.
Kindiki: The New Contender
Amid the shifting dynamics, current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has emerged as a contender for Mt Kenya leadership. However, Kindiki faces significant hurdles, including a lack of grassroots support and an electoral mandate. Political analyst Charles Mwangi described Kindiki as an outsider, largely viewed as an appointee of Ruto rather than a true representative of the region.
This confusion over leadership has created a vacuum, leaving Mt Kenya voters divided between Gachagua, Kindiki, and potential reemergence by the Kenyatta family.
Gachagua’s Path Forward
Despite the setbacks, Gachagua remains a central figure in Mt Kenya politics. Reports suggest he is exploring political vehicles, including the Democratic Party or even forming a new party, to strengthen his influence. Democratic Party chairman Esau Kioni has welcomed Gachagua, emphasizing his potential to unite the region under a clear agenda.
Gachagua’s confrontational style and grassroots connection remain his strongest assets. However, analysts warn that his approach must shift from personal grievances to a more strategic vision for Mt Kenya. As the region navigates its evolving political landscape, Gachagua’s ability to rebuild alliances and adapt to emerging challenges will determine his success in reclaiming his position as a regional kingpin.
For now, Mt Kenya remains a battleground, with its political fate hanging in the balance as the 2027 elections loom closer.
