Gerald Nyaoma Arita officially assumed his role as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) on Tuesday. His appointment, made by President William Ruto, followed a rigorous approval process involving the Senate Finance and Budget Committee and the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Finance and Planning.
With over three decades of experience at the CBK, Nyaoma’s deep knowledge of the institution makes him a natural fit for the role. He began his career at the bank in August 1988 and has since held key leadership positions across several departments, including Financial Markets, Banking Services, and Internal Audit. Notably, he served as the Director of the Bank Supervision Department, a role in which he contributed significantly to strengthening Kenya’s financial regulatory framework.
During his parliamentary vetting, Nyaoma highlighted his extensive experience within the Central Bank, noting that he had played a pivotal role in mentoring and training staff to uphold the bank’s high standards. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to continue steering the CBK towards greater success.
CBK Governor Dr. Kamau Thugge warmly welcomed Nyaoma, stating, “On behalf of the CBK Board, Management, and Staff, I wish to congratulate Mr. Nyaoma on his appointment. It is an honor and a pleasure to welcome him back to the Central Bank of Kenya.”
Nyaoma’s academic credentials further underscore his suitability for the role. He holds an M. Phil. (Economics) degree from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a BA in Economics from the University of Nairobi. Additionally, he is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K), a Certified Public Secretary (CPS-K), and an Associate of the Kenya Institute of Bankers (AKIB).
In his new capacity, Nyaoma is expected to work closely with Governor Thugge to shape monetary policy, strengthen Kenya’s financial systems, and promote economic stability. His leadership comes at a time when the CBK is focusing on fostering innovation and enhancing regulatory oversight to navigate an increasingly dynamic financial landscape.
