GETuP Launches in Kenya to Empower Filmmakers

Kenya’s creative and film industry is set to receive a significant boost with the introduction of the Global Entertainment Talent Upskilling Program (GETuP), spearheaded by the Fela Oke Academy and supported by vital local partners, including the Kenya Film Commission (KFC). Slated to run from November 18th to 30th, 2024, this two-week program aims to empower aspiring filmmakers and creatives through hands-on training that bridges local talent with global industry standards.

GETuP has already made waves in regions such as Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados, and its entry into Kenya is being hailed as a transformative step for the continent. Fela Oke, the founder of the Fela Oke Academy and CEO of Hyphen8 Media Partners, emphasized the program’s long-term vision. “This program is a testament to our commitment to nurturing creative talent and fostering international collaboration. We believe that the skills and connections made during GETuP Kenya will have a lasting impact on the participants and the broader creative industry in Kenya and beyond,” Oke stated.

What makes GETuP particularly notable is its multifaceted approach. According to Timothy Owase, CEO of KFC, the initiative is not solely about imparting technical skills; it also focuses on fostering creativity, encouraging innovation, and building a supportive professional network. “This program will teach participants how to harness their creativity while providing them with the essential skills needed in today’s competitive global entertainment scene,” Owase explained.

One of the standout features of GETuP is its Shadow Program, designed to nurture local facilitators and ensure the initiative’s sustainability. This program will allow local experts to upskill while also contributing to the training of emerging talent. Mike Strano, founder of PHAT! Productions and co-founder of YAKWETU™, emphasized the importance of this sustainability. “In every project we undertake, we’re always intentional about making a sustainable and transformative impact on the creative industry of Africa,” he said.

The curriculum of GETuP is comprehensive, covering various creative disciplines such as screen acting, production management, cinematography, and screenwriting. The workshops will be led by renowned industry experts, including UK-based Darren Gordon for acting, Dominic Jones for cinematography, and award-winning Nigerian writer Dami Elebe for screenwriting. This lineup of facilitators ensures that participants receive top-tier training that aligns with global standards.

However, GETuP goes beyond skills acquisition. Graduates of the program will gain entry into the Hyphen8 Global Talent Database, which casting agents worldwide can access. This exposure is crucial for creating real-world opportunities in an industry that thrives on connections. Additionally, participants will have the chance to be involved in Hyphen8-produced films, providing them with invaluable on-set experience.

The program is expected to open doors for employment, networking, and co-production ventures, positioning Kenya as a formidable player in Africa’s creative economy. By enhancing the skill sets of local filmmakers and creatives, GETuP aims to create a ripple effect that could elevate the entire industry.

In conclusion, the launch of GETuP in Kenya represents a significant milestone for the country’s film and creative sectors. With a focus on nurturing talent and fostering international collaboration, the program is poised to make a lasting impact on the creative landscape. As it prepares to kick off in November, anticipation is high among industry stakeholders and aspiring filmmakers alike, eager to harness the opportunities this initiative promises to provide.
