The national government, in collaboration with the county government of Garissa, has earmarked Sh700 million for the modernization of the Garissa airstrip. President William Ruto announced the funding during the launch of the construction process on Thursday, highlighting the strategic importance of the project in boosting regional economic development.
The renovation, which includes the extension and modernization of the runway, aims to transform the facility into a key economic hub for the region. President Ruto underscored the necessity of the project, noting that residents previously had to shelter under trees while waiting for flights. The ongoing developments will enhance the comfort and efficiency of the airstrip, ultimately fostering greater connectivity.
In addition to the national government’s commitment, the county government of Garissa has allocated funds towards the construction of a new terminal building. The aim is to facilitate the smooth movement of passengers and goods while improving the overall airport infrastructure.
“We want to grow the economy of this region, and that can only be possible when we have such crucial facilities. We want to have daily flights to Nairobi so that businesses can thrive,” President Ruto emphasized.
Accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and other local leaders, President Ruto is currently on a tour of northern Kenya, focusing on development initiatives. His visit began on Tuesday in Mandera, proceeded to Wajir, and will continue in Isiolo on Friday before concluding in Marsabit.
Originally constructed in 1984, the Garissa airstrip has never undergone major renovations. The current modernization efforts aim to accommodate more aircraft, ease transportation, and enhance the region’s commercial viability. The upgraded facility will also play a crucial role in providing critical emergency services, including humanitarian relief and medical evacuations.
As part of the renovation, additional infrastructural developments will include the construction of a perimeter wall to enhance security, a dedicated car park, and a modern entrance gate. These improvements will ensure that the airstrip meets contemporary aviation standards and serves as a reliable transport link for residents and businesses in Garissa and surrounding regions.
With these upgrades, the airstrip is set to become a key gateway to the northeastern region, boosting trade, investment, and overall economic growth.
