The government, through the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, is making significant strides in Garissa County with the rollout of two major development projects valued at approximately Sh1.06 billion. These initiatives are set to transform the region, fostering economic growth and enhancing living standards.
The first of these projects, the Garissa Township Affordable Housing Project, represents a Sh1.01 billion investment. Situated along Kismayu Road, the project aims to provide 408 housing units, comprising a mix of social, affordable, and market-rate units. It is designed to cater to a wide range of residents, with 192 social units (including studio apartments and three-room units), 144 affordable housing units (with two and three-bedroom options), and 72 market-rate units. This diverse mix will create a balanced and inclusive community, offering modern amenities while respecting local architectural and cultural preferences.
The second project, the Mikono ESP Market, is being developed with a Sh47.9 million investment and is located next to the Garissa Bus Stage in Garissa Town. This market will accommodate 204 traders and is designed to modernize traditional commerce in the area. With dedicated trading spaces, the market will feature essential amenities such as a mother’s lactation room, cold storage facilities, and a food court. Additionally, the market will integrate digital infrastructure, including an ICT hub and modern payment systems, bridging the gap between traditional commerce and digital trade.
Both projects are a testament to the collaboration between the national and county governments, with a particular focus on incorporating local Jua Kali artisans and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) into the formal economy. The Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development emphasized the importance of these developments in providing modern infrastructure while promoting local economic growth.
The Garissa Township Affordable Housing Project is expected to generate around 300 daily construction jobs, contributing significantly to the local economy. The Mikono ESP Market will employ 100 workers during its construction phase. Collectively, the projects will inject over Sh850 million into Garissa’s economy, benefiting local businesses through wages, material procurement, and associated services.
These development projects highlight the government’s commitment to sustainable growth, offering improved housing and economic opportunities for Garissa’s residents, while also modernizing the county’s infrastructure for future generations.
