Government Vows to Crack Down on Unlawful Activities During Protests

The Kenyan government has committed to a stringent crackdown on individuals caught engaging in unlawful activities during the recent anti-Finance Bill 2024 and anti-government protests.

On July 3, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) published a list of wanted individuals linked to the protests. The notice includes images and photos of the suspects, advising them to report to the nearest police station for further action. Among those listed is a young man seen in a viral video chanting “Ruto must go” and another dressed in the Senate Serjeant-at-Arms uniform.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the government addressed the widespread protests that began on June 18, following the controversial Finance Bill 2024. The demonstrations have escalated, resulting in loss of lives, significant property damage, and attempts to attack critical government infrastructure.

The government has emphasized its commitment to restoring order and holding accountable those involved in criminal activities during the protests. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki stated that the protests, initially a legitimate expression of public disapproval, were hijacked by criminals. He asserted that it is unacceptable for individuals masquerading as peaceful protesters to terrorize the public and damage property without facing consequences.

“We will not tolerate criminal elements using protests as a cover for unlawful activities,” Kindiki said, underscoring the government’s resolve to take necessary actions against those responsible.
