Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced a set of new rules for boda boda riders operating within the Central Business District (CBD). The new regulations were unveiled on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards improving order and security in Nairobi’s bustling transport sector.
The key feature of the new regulations is the requirement for boda boda operators to wear branded reflector jackets. These jackets will not only increase visibility and safety but will also display the name of the rider’s Sacco (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization), ensuring that all riders are easily identifiable. Additionally, each rider will be assigned a personal identification number, which will facilitate the identification of legitimate operators and enhance overall accountability.
These measures were established during a meeting between boda boda Sacco operators and Nairobi County’s Security and Compliance Chief Officer, Tony Kimani. The meeting, held at the Green Park Terminus, focused on addressing the challenges faced by boda boda operators and finding practical solutions to improve the industry’s standards.
“The meeting resolved to have all CBD boda boda operators wear branded reflectors according to their Sacco’s name and an individual personal number for easy identification of legitimate members among riders, security marshals, and motorbike users,” read part of the official statement released by the county.
The introduction of personal identification numbers and branded reflector jackets is expected to streamline operations, making it easier for authorities and the public to distinguish between registered operators and those operating unlawfully. This move is anticipated to reduce cases of crime and misconduct often associated with unregistered boda boda riders.
Governor Sakaja emphasized the importance of these regulations in promoting a safer and more organized environment for both riders and passengers. “This initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of all road users and enhancing the professionalism of the boda boda industry in Nairobi,” he stated.
Furthermore, the county government is encouraging boda boda riders to explore additional income opportunities by partnering with companies for marketing purposes. Riders can earn extra income by wearing branded reflectors that promote various products and services, thereby diversifying their revenue streams.
The county government’s proactive approach in collaborating with boda boda Sacco operators demonstrates a commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by the sector. By implementing these new regulations, Nairobi is setting a precedent for other cities grappling with similar issues in the boda boda industry.
As these changes take effect, boda boda operators and the public alike can look forward to a more orderly, secure, and economically vibrant transport environment in Nairobi’s CBD.
