As winter weather approaches, several localities in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions have announced closures and heightened preparedness measures to ensure the safety of residents. With temperatures dropping and the threat of winter precipitation, Horry, Florence, and Marion counties are taking proactive steps to address the anticipated storm.
Horry County Readies for Winter Storm
Horry County moved into OPCON 2 status early on Tuesday, signaling that emergency plans are now in place and local authorities are operating in a heightened state of awareness. Although the county’s Emergency Operations Center has not yet been activated, emergency management teams are monitoring the situation closely, prepared to adjust as necessary.
Officials are urging residents to take immediate steps to protect themselves and their property. Key recommendations include:
- Check on loved ones: Make sure family, friends, and neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled, are safe and prepared.
- Charge electronics: Ensure devices like phones and tablets are fully charged before power outages may occur.
- Stock up on supplies: Keep nonperishable food and plenty of water on hand to last at least 72 hours.
- Test safety equipment: Ensure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are functioning properly.
- Be cautious with generators: Follow all safety instructions for generators and alternative heating sources to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Avoid traveling: Stay off the roads once winter precipitation begins to fall.
In response to the expected storm, the City of Myrtle Beach also announced it will move into OPCON 2 status, closing city offices at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and remaining closed on Wednesday. Similarly, Horry County’s facilities will shut down at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and remain closed through Wednesday. This includes the closure of Horry County Solid Waste Authority facilities, and the cancellation of activities with Horry County Parks & Recreation and Horry County Library services.
Florence and Marion Counties Join the Preparedness Effort
Florence County has also implemented closures in anticipation of the storm. City offices will be closed on Wednesday, along with the cancellation of in-person court proceedings at the Florence Municipal Court. All community centers will close by 5 p.m. on Tuesday and remain shut through Wednesday, with Parks, Recreation & Tourism athletics practices for Tuesday and Wednesday canceled.
Marion County has announced that all administrative offices will be closed on Wednesday, with updates about Thursday’s schedule to be provided once the storm’s impact is assessed.
The anticipated winter storm is expected to disrupt normal activities across the region, but local authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of all residents. Horry County officials expect to resume normal operations on Thursday, depending on weather conditions. As always, staying informed and prepared is the best way to handle any severe weather situation.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and official announcements for any changes to closures or emergency procedures.
