Gucha Sub-County Director of Education, David Akalea, has called on head teachers and education stakeholders to prioritize the safety and security of students during the ongoing second term sports championships for Primary and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS). Speaking recently at Tendere Secondary School, where he inaugurated the sub-county competition, Akalea emphasized the importance of adhering to age regulations and ensuring fair play.
Addressing the teachers, Akalea stressed, “I ask the teachers not to focus on winning and getting trophies unfairly but instead to focus on training young upcoming talents who will be able to make a career out of sports and games.” His remarks highlighted the importance of nurturing genuine talent over seeking short-term victories.
Despite financial challenges, the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) Gucha Branch was commended by Akalea for their dedication in preparing strong teams for the Sub-County level. The KEPSHA Gucha Branch Chairman, Edward Gisemba, acknowledged the efforts of the 41 public primary schools in the region. “We expect to take many teams to county level and beyond because we have trained well,” Gisemba said, expressing optimism for the performance of their teams.
Kisii County Director of Education, Philip Chirchir, assured the public that preparations for the county-level championships were thorough and on track. “The organizers have planned everything well now we are waiting for the kick-off on Friday and the activities will run for two days,” Chirchir stated.
Among the schools expected to excel at the county championships, which commence today, are Tendere, Nyarenda, and Mang’ere schools. The second-term primary and junior games will feature a variety of sports, including soccer, handball, netball, and volleyball for both boys and girls.
As the championships progress, the emphasis remains on ensuring that the events are conducted fairly, safely, and with a focus on developing young talent for future success.
