Renowned activist Hanifa Adan has opened up about the emotional toll of online abuse and criticism she faced during her rise as a prominent government critic and social media mobilizer. Known for her role in the Gen Z protests of 2024, Hanifa recalls moments where the relentless trolling on her social media pages almost pushed her to quit her activism.
The 28-year-old activist vividly remembers a turning point on June 27, 2024, when she was branded a “sellout” by some of her followers after urging Gen Z protesters to refrain from marching to State House, just days after the historic storming of Parliament. The backlash was intense, with many condemning her decision, and Hanifa openly admitted to breaking down in tears. “It was a hard day. I cried, but I never quit,” she shared in an emotional interview on NTV.
Despite the vitriol, Hanifa stands by her decision, explaining that she did not want to see more bloodshed and that redirecting her followers to visit injured protesters at Kenyatta National Hospital was the safer choice. The abuse, which included misogynistic attacks, took a toll on her mental health, but Hanifa has since developed a thicker skin.
Her activism journey began in 2022, when she highlighted a drainage issue in Korogocho slums, leading to action from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. However, the road to activism hasn’t been without obstacles. Hanifa also faced criticism over Ksh. 30 million raised to help Gen Z protest victims, clarifying that the funds were handled by M-Changa, and she only verified cases before they were sent directly to hospitals or families.
As part of the presidential exploratory committee for Okiya Omtatah, Hanifa remains resolute in her mission to continue her activism. She called on Kenyans to view plain-clothed police officers involved in abductions and disappearances as criminals, emphasizing the need for justice in the face of increasing political repression.
Looking ahead to 2025, Hanifa is determined to continue her fight for justice, despite the challenges she faces.
