Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale recently held a key consultative meeting with the Council of Governors (CoG) Health Committee, led by Wajir Governor and CoG Health Chairperson H.E. Ahmed Abdullahi, to address emerging issues and shape the future of Kenya’s health sector. The discussions centered around key priorities including the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA), the digitization of the health system, and the integration of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff crucial aspects that directly impact the quality and accessibility of healthcare services across the country.
One of the primary areas of focus during the meeting was the operationalization of the Digital Health Agency. It was agreed that the agency would play a significant role in assessing existing health information systems within the counties and spearheading efforts to accelerate the digitalization of health facilities nationwide. This initiative aims to streamline the management of health services and improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery in all 47 counties. By embracing modern technology, the health system is poised to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing health initiatives and foster smoother coordination between county and national health authorities.
Additionally, the discussion on the Social Health Authority (SHA) centered on addressing the challenges faced by health facilities in managing critical illness cases. The stakeholders agreed that there should be increased allocation for emergency, chronic, and critical illness treatments within the SHA framework. The expansion of resources would ensure that these categories of care are adequately funded, reducing the financial burden on individuals and improving access to essential health services. The meeting also focused on strengthening the capacity of health facility leaders, particularly at Level 2 and Level 5 hospitals. There will be a concerted effort to train these facility in-charges on effective registration processes, system optimization, and the full range of services offered by the SHA.
The broader objectives of the discussions align with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), a strategy aimed at improving the health system’s resilience and responsiveness to the needs of the population. The incorporation of the SHA and other health reforms into this framework reflects a clear commitment to enhancing the country’s healthcare infrastructure in line with national development goals.
During the meeting, Hon. Duale reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of all Kenyans, highlighting the critical importance of collaboration with county governments to ensure effective healthcare delivery. He emphasized that partnerships at the county level are vital for the successful implementation of health programs and for ensuring that health services reach every corner of the country. In his remarks, he also underscored the need for integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of health resources, which are essential for fostering trust in the system and achieving sustainable health outcomes.
Human resources also emerged as a critical area of focus, especially in the rollout of the Taifa Care Model. The Cabinet Secretary acknowledged that the success of this model, which seeks to provide comprehensive health coverage to all Kenyans, hinges on the effective training and deployment of skilled healthcare professionals. The Ministry, in collaboration with county governments, is committed to addressing the challenges related to human resource capacity, ensuring that health workers are adequately supported and equipped to provide high-quality care.
The meeting was attended by key health officials, including Principal Secretaries Ms. Mary Muthoni for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mr. Harry Kimtai for Medical Services, and Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth. CoG Vice Chairperson and Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga also participated, along with other senior officials. The gathering represented a concerted effort to ensure that Kenya’s health sector is well-positioned to meet the demands of a growing population and evolving healthcare needs. Through collaboration, strategic investments, and a commitment to reform, the government and county leaders aim to enhance the efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability of healthcare services in Kenya.
