Hundreds of residents in Embu County have received free eye treatment during a one-day medical camp organized by the Lions Club Embu in collaboration with the Rotary Club. The event, held on Saturday at Lion School in Embu Town, provided essential eye screenings and treatment for various vision-related ailments, significantly improving the quality of life for many patients.
The medical camp targeted individuals of all ages, screening for common eyesight problems such as cataracts, refractive errors, photosensitivity, and age-related conditions. Ophthalmic Clinical Officer Lilian Nyaga highlighted that among the elderly, prevalent conditions included diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, and suspicious growths that required specialized treatment.
Among younger individuals, the most common issues identified were refractive errors, eye allergies, and photosensitivity, largely attributed to excessive use of digital devices. Nyaga advised young people to reduce screen time and maintain a safe distance when using digital gadgets to protect their eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
“It is also advisable for them to use photochromic glasses, which are designed to protect the eyes from these harmful rays,” she stated.
The camp also addressed cases requiring cataract surgery. Nyaga noted that a list of patients in need of such procedures was being consolidated to ensure they receive the necessary surgical interventions in due course.
Residents were also educated on the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, particularly one rich in vitamin A, to enhance eye health. Additionally, patients with reading difficulties were provided with free prescription glasses, while those suffering from minor infections and allergies received eye drops.
Beneficiaries of the initiative expressed gratitude, citing the camp as a life-changing opportunity. Many who previously struggled with vision problems were relieved to receive corrective treatment without the burden of medical expenses.
“I had a problem with blurry vision and couldn’t see distant objects clearly, but today I am happy that I have been treated and given glasses to correct my eyesight,” said Richer Ireri, one of the beneficiaries.
Lions Club Embu President Chandrakant Patel emphasized that the eye camp is an annual initiative aimed at giving back to society and improving public health. He reaffirmed their commitment to continuing such humanitarian efforts to support residents in need of medical assistance.
The event was yet another testament to the power of community-driven health initiatives, ensuring that many Embu residents now have a clearer vision and a brighter future.
