A team of medical experts has been deployed to South Mugirango, Kisii County, to investigate a mysterious disease that has affected more than 200 people in three villages. Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni confirmed that the experts would reinforce the county government team already on the ground to determine the cause of the outbreak.
The Ministry of Health has intensified surveillance and screening efforts to identify the disease, which has caused severe diarrhea with bloody stools, fever, and intense headaches among those affected. PS Muthoni, speaking at an AIPCA church event in Mwea, Kirinyaga, assured the public that the government was taking swift action to contain the situation.
A multi-agency government team has urged residents to seek medical attention at nearby health facilities as authorities await results from the government chemist. Since the outbreak began, an unconfirmed number of individuals have been hospitalized at Tabaka Mission Hospital, Nyatike Level Two Hospital, Prina Hospital, and Royal Hospital in Rongo, among other private healthcare centers.
Health officials are working around the clock to establish the root cause of the illness. Samples have been collected from affected individuals for laboratory testing, with preliminary investigations focusing on potential bacterial or viral infections, water contamination, or food poisoning.
Residents have expressed concern over the rapid spread of the disease, with many calling for urgent intervention. “We are worried because more people are getting sick each day. We need answers and immediate solutions,” said a local resident from one of the affected villages.
The Ministry of Health is collaborating with county health authorities to ensure affected individuals receive appropriate medical care while implementing preventive measures to curb further infections. Authorities have also urged locals to observe proper hygiene practices, including drinking boiled or treated water and maintaining sanitation to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.
As the investigation continues, the government has assured the public that all necessary measures will be taken to contain the outbreak and prevent future occurrences. More updates are expected once laboratory results provide a clearer understanding of the disease’s cause.
