Global Situation and Key Developments
A recent report from the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) highlighted concerns over the rising cases of wild poliovirus in endemic regions and the lack of visible efforts to bring about transformative change in the eradication strategy. Concerns were also raised regarding the spread of circulating variant polioviruses (cVDPVs) into new regions, including European countries. The importance of improving routine immunization and reaching zero-dose children was emphasized as a critical step toward polio eradication.
SAGE reiterated its support for the safe cessation of bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) and endorsed pre-cessation vaccination campaigns to ensure proper immunization coverage. The group also approved a new risk-grading framework for countries transitioning to inactivated polio vaccine (IPV)-only schedules and recommended that the World Health Organization initiate consultations with Member States and Regional Offices on this matter.
Additionally, SAGE revised its recommendations for polio immunization schedules based on updated evidence. It concluded that a three-dose schedule of IPV combined with a whole-cell pertussis-containing hexavalent vaccine, starting at six weeks of age or later, is sufficient for protection. The full report detailing these updates is expected to be published in the coming weeks.
Gaza Polio Outbreak Response
In response to the recent polio outbreak in Gaza, a vaccination campaign was successfully implemented, reaching over 600,000 children under the age of ten. This initiative aimed to curb the spread of the virus and prevent further infections. A short video documenting the campaign’s efforts and impact has been made available for public viewing.
Latest Poliovirus Cases and Environmental Detections
Several new cases of polio and positive environmental samples have been reported in multiple countries this week. The latest updates include:
- Pakistan: 12 wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)-positive environmental samples.
- Angola: One cVDPV2 case and one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
- Chad: One cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
- Côte d’Ivoire: One cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
- Djibouti: Three cVDPV2-positive environmental samples.
- Ethiopia: One cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
- Nigeria: One cVDPV2 case.
- Somalia: Four cVDPV2 cases and one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
- Yemen: Five cVDPV2-positive environmental samples.
The continued detection of both WPV1 and cVDPV2 cases highlights the ongoing challenges in global polio eradication efforts. Enhanced surveillance, improved routine immunization, and rapid outbreak responses remain crucial in preventing further spread. The global health community continues to work toward the goal of polio eradication through coordinated vaccination campaigns and strengthened public health measures.
