The community of Killeavy and surrounding areas has been left in mourning following the tragic death of 13-year-old Tiarnan Trainor. The much-loved teenager passed away after sustaining critical injuries in a quad bike accident on Low Road near Killeavy on Thursday. He was transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Tiarnan was a Year 10 student at St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook, where he had recently been elected to the student council, a reflection of his popularity and leadership among his peers. In a heartfelt statement, the school described Tiarnán as having an “infectious personality” and a passion for lorries. To support the grieving school community, the school announced that its oratory would be open over the weekend, and the Education Authority’s Critical Incident Team would provide further assistance upon pupils’ return next week.
Christine Fearon, Vice Principal of St Paul’s, called the news “devastating,” describing Tiarnán as a “cheeky chappy” who was both “likeable and lively.” She added, “He was a wonderful young lad who will leave a massive void in our school.”
Tributes have also poured in from other institutions that shaped Tiarnán’s life. Jonesborough Primary School, where he was a former pupil, remembered him as a “lively and spirited boy” whose untimely death has deeply saddened the community. Killeavy GAA club, where Tiarnán played for the under-14 boys team, paid homage to his “sparkling and positive personality” and described him as a “pleasure to coach.”
The 12th Armagh Slieve Gullion Scouts and Armagh Summer School, where Tiarnán attended Gaelic Games camps, expressed their sorrow, recalling fond memories of his vibrant spirit.
Local SDLP MLA Justin McNulty described the incident as “horrendous” and expressed his shock, particularly at such a difficult time of year.
Tiarnán’s death has left a profound void in his family, school, and community, with all remembering him as a spirited and joyful young boy whose impact will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
