James Kiiru, a popular presenter at Homeboyz Radio, has received a major career milestone by being nominated for the Radio Host of the Year award at the prestigious People’s Choice Awards. This recognition could see him join the ranks of the country’s most influential radio personalities, a feat that would mark a significant achievement in his career.
In a candid interview with Mpasho, Kiiru shared his disbelief when he first received news of his nomination. Given the many scams that are common in the digital age, it is no surprise that Kiiru initially thought the message he received was just another hoax. “I got a text from the organizers congratulating me. I honestly thought it was a scam. I went to their website and confirmed it myself,” Kiiru explained. This moment of doubt soon gave way to excitement, as he realized that his hard work had been recognized on a national level.
Although Kiiru was initially overwhelmed by the honor of being nominated, he remains grounded about the significance of the achievement. “Winning is great, but the nomination itself is a win,” he said. For him, this recognition serves as an affirmation that he is on the right path. “If I win, it’s a good assurance and a pat on my back that I’m doing a good job. It will mean a lot more exposure internationally. But even just competing with all those other talented and deserving presenters is a dream come true.”
Kiiru’s journey to success is not the typical story of an overnight star. In fact, few know that just a few years ago, Kiiru was operating a “Mkokoteni” (handcart) in Ruiru’s Matangi area, transporting building materials to make ends meet. It was a tough life, but one that he faced with determination and resilience. “Four years ago, I used to operate a Mkokoteni in Ruiru, Matangi, transporting building materials. I did this while working on TV as the pay was really bad. Being able to now work in one of the biggest media houses is a dream come true,” he recalled.
This humble beginning has not only shaped Kiiru’s work ethic but has also served as a source of inspiration to many. Today, Kiiru can look back on a career that spans several years, with the past four of those spent at Homeboyz Radio. His entry into radio came after working in a small campus radio station for three years, followed by two years in the television industry. “I have been on the radio for the last seven years. Four out of those seven have been at Homeboyz. For three years, I worked in a small campus radio station. I worked in the TV industry for two years,” Kiiru said, reflecting on his journey.
Kiiru’s story is one of perseverance and belief in oneself, and he hopes it serves as a motivation to his listeners and fans. “I hope I inspire them to chase their dreams. If a boy raised in Dandora and who pushed a Mkokoteni to earn a living is doing it, so can you. Do not give up,” he shared.
His message is clear: no matter where you come from or how difficult your circumstances may seem, with determination and hard work, you can achieve your dreams. James Kiiru’s journey from the streets of Ruiru to becoming one of Kenya’s leading radio personalities is proof of this powerful truth.
As Kiiru continues to rise in the media industry, his story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve greatness. With the People’s Choice Awards nomination, he has already made history whether or not he wins, his journey remains an inspiration to many.
