The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a violent clash along the Narok-Nairobi Highway on Friday, which left two people dead and several others, including police officers, injured. The confrontation arose after a speeding vehicle killed 25 sheep and fled the scene, sparking protests by herders.
In a statement on Saturday, IPOA chairperson Ahmed Hassan condemned the incident and announced the deployment of a rapid response team to investigate. “IPOA will make appropriate recommendations for any police officers found culpable for violations of the law,” he stated. The authority also urged local leaders and government institutions to address the recurring issue of livestock and motor vehicle accidents in the area.
The incident unfolded at Duka Moja Trading Centre in Narok County when herders, angered by the loss of their sheep, barricaded the highway demanding Ksh 3 million in compensation. The protest escalated when police arrived to restore order, leading to a violent confrontation. Police used teargas and firearms, while demonstrators retaliated with weapons, resulting in injuries on both sides.
Nine police officers were injured in the melee, with two sustaining serious wounds. One officer’s hand was severed by a Maasai sword, and both were airlifted to Nairobi for advanced medical care. IPOA extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
Dr. Resila Onyango, the outgoing National Police Service spokesperson, confirmed that Nairegia Enkare and Ntulele Police Stations were damaged during the clash. Additionally, police vehicles, including Land Cruisers, were vandalized, and a firearm stolen from an injured officer was later recovered without its magazine.
