Isiolo Traders Eagerly Await Completion of Modern Market

As the construction of the new three-storey Isiolo market nears completion, traders in the region are filled with optimism and hope for improved working conditions. The market, which is now 80% complete, is expected to be a significant game-changer for the local economy, serving traders from across Meru, Nanyuki, Samburu, Isiolo, and Marsabit. The project, spearheaded by the Isiolo County government in collaboration with the Isiolo market committee, is poised to become a regional hub for both wholesale and retail businesses.

A Boon for Local Traders

The new market has been eagerly anticipated by traders, who have long sought better facilities to conduct their businesses. Ntari, the secretary of the Isiolo market committee, expressed his optimism that the county government would honor the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the allocation of stalls. “We are hopeful that the market will not only provide us with better working conditions but also ensure that those who lost their stalls to fire are given priority in the allocation process,” Ntari said.

The county government has assured traders that they are closely monitoring the construction process to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation of stalls. Isiolo Municipality Manager Osman Halakhe emphasized the importance of transparency in this process, stating, “When the time to hand over the stalls to the traders comes, we want to ensure complete transparency. We request that the county government gives priority to those whose stalls were destroyed by fire.”

Economic Growth and Revenue Generation

The new market is expected to serve 1,200 traders, providing them with a centralized location to conduct their business activities. Market committee chairman James Gitonga highlighted the economic significance of the market, stating, “Markets play a significant role in economic growth by providing a platform for individuals, businesses, and governments to invest, borrow, and raise capital. This leads to increased efficiency, new businesses, and employment opportunities.”

The market is anticipated to be a vital revenue stream for the county government through the collection of fees from traders. Gitonga expressed his gratitude to the county government for its efforts in ensuring the market’s completion, noting that the market will also play a critical role in uplifting the status of Isiolo County.

Modern Facilities and Infrastructure

The new market building is being constructed with modern amenities in mind. The contractor is currently working on essential infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical installations, and the installation of doors and windows. One of the key features of the market will be an open-air section on the top floor, catering to various types of businesses.

In addition to these modern facilities, the county government has also committed to drilling a borehole to provide a reliable water supply to the market. Halakhe, during a recent visit to the construction site, reiterated the county’s commitment to ensuring that the market is equipped with all necessary facilities for traders to operate efficiently.

“We are hastening the completion process to ensure most traders have enough space to conduct their business,” Halakhe said. “The contractor is working diligently to ensure that all necessary infrastructure is in place.”

Addressing Misinformation and Ensuring Fairness

As the market nears completion, there have been concerns about misinformation regarding the allocation of stalls. Ntari warned against individuals spreading false information and assured traders that the committee has records of all those who lost their livelihoods due to the fire. “We will ensure that they are given priority,” he said, urging traders to remain patient and not to fall prey to rumors.

Halakhe echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of fairness and transparency in the stall allocation process. “We are working closely with the Isiolo market committee members and the contractor to monitor the construction process,” he said.

A Bright Future for Isiolo Traders

With the market expected to be completed soon, traders are looking forward to a brighter future. The new market is not only set to improve their working conditions but also to enhance the overall economic landscape of Isiolo County. As the project enters its final stages, the anticipation and excitement among traders continue to build, with many eagerly awaiting the day they can finally set up shop in the modern facility.

The Isiolo market represents more than just a place to conduct business; it symbolizes hope, growth, and the promise of a better future for the local community. As the finishing touches are applied, traders remain hopeful that the market will bring about the positive change they have long desired.
