James Earl Jones, Iconic Voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa, Dies at 93

James Earl Jones, the legendary American actor celebrated for his deep, resonant voice that brought to life iconic characters such as Darth Vader in “Star Wars” and Mufasa in “The Lion King,” has passed away at the age of 93. He died early Monday morning, surrounded by family, according to his agent, Barry McPherson.

Jones’s illustrious career spanned decades, during which he starred in numerous films including “Field of Dreams,” “Coming To America,” “Conan the Barbarian,” and “The Lion King.” Despite his vast filmography, he was perhaps best known for his role as the voice behind the sinister Darth Vader, a performance that has become synonymous with the “Star Wars” franchise. His powerful, gravelly voice turned the character into one of the most recognizable villains in cinematic history.

Mark Hamill, who portrayed Darth Vader’s son, Luke Skywalker, in the “Star Wars” saga, paid tribute to Jones on social media, posting “RIP Dad” along with a broken heart emoji. Hamill’s message underscored the deep personal and professional impact Jones had on those who worked with him.

Jones’s contributions to the arts were widely recognized during his lifetime. He was the recipient of three Tony Awards, two Emmys, a Grammy, and an honorary Oscar in 2011 for lifetime achievement. In 1971, Jones made history as the second Black man to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, following Sidney Poitier.

Tributes from fellow actors and celebrities flooded in following the news of his death. LeVar Burton, known for his role in “Star Trek,” was among the first to honor Jones, stating, “There will never be another of his particular combinations of graces.” Colman Domingo, another respected actor, echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for Jones’s impact: “Thank you dear James Earl Jones for everything. A master of our craft. We stand on your shoulders. Rest now. You gave us your best.”

Kevin Costner, who co-starred with Jones in “Field of Dreams,” reflected on the actor’s presence, saying, “That booming voice. That quiet strength. The kindness that he radiated. So much can be said about his legacy, so I’ll just say how thankful I am that part of it includes ‘Field of Dreams.’”

Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer noted that Jones’s “voice and talent will be remembered always” and praised his enduring influence on cinema. Crystal Minkoff, wife of “The Lion King” co-director Rob Minkoff, shared a personal memory, stating that Jones’s acceptance of the role of Mufasa had made a young animator’s dream come true.

Jones’s legacy extends beyond film and theater; he was also the voice of CNN’s iconic tagline, “This is CNN,” a role that the broadcaster described as bringing “instant authority, grace, and decorum.”

Born in Mississippi in January 1931, Jones overcame a childhood stammer to develop one of the most famous voices in entertainment history. His early struggle with speech only added to the depth and texture of his performances. Jones lent his voice to Darth Vader starting with the original “Star Wars” in 1977 and continued through sequels, including “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” He reprised the role in later films, including “Rogue One” and “The Rise of Skywalker.”

Despite the success of the “Star Wars” franchise, Jones was modest about his role, initially considering it just another “special effect” and earning only $9,000 for his contribution to the first film. Over time, however, he grew to embrace the character and the fans who cherished his portrayal.
