Janet Wanja Mungai, the celebrated Kenyan volleyball star, was remembered today in a moving memorial service that highlighted her remarkable contributions both on and off the court. The service, attended by close friends, family, and colleagues, paid tribute to Wanja’s lasting legacy, with heartfelt eulogies from those who knew her best.
Described as a superhero, mentor, and role model, Wanja’s impact on the volleyball community and beyond was evident in the emotional tributes shared during the service. Colleagues and loved ones fondly recalled her bright spirit, unwavering determination, and dedication to mentoring younger athletes. Wanja’s influence stretched far beyond the sport, inspiring those who knew her to lead lives of purpose and integrity.
Born on February 24, 1984, Wanja was raised in Kahawa Garrison, Nairobi, where she developed a love for volleyball under the mentorship of Coach Juma Walukhu. At just 20 years old, she represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics, marking the start of a 15-year career that saw her achieve extraordinary success. Wanja was the celebrated setter for the Malkia Strikers, winning five African Nations Championship titles and participating in global tournaments such as the FIVB World Championships and World Grand Prix. Her professional journey also included stints at Kenya Pipeline, KCB, APR in Rwanda, and the UAE.
Beyond her sports career, Wanja was deeply rooted in her Christian faith, actively participating in church activities. Known for her warmth, generosity, and striking beauty, she touched the hearts of many in her community, particularly through her involvement with the GAFFE TRIBE welfare group.
In a rare honor, her jersey number 7 was retired in recognition of her contributions to volleyball. Wanja passed away on December 27, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer, just after serving as the Malkia Strikers’ trainer at the Paris Olympic Games and the 2024 World Challenger in the Philippines.
Janet Wanja’s life and career will forever be remembered as a beacon of excellence and inspiration to future generations.
