Julius Irungu Mwangi, father of Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, has died at the age of 64 after a prolonged battle with cancer. His death comes just months after his son was sentenced to death for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. Jowie’s mother, Annastacia Thaama, confirmed that Mwangi passed away at Nakuru Level Five Hospital Annex.
The family has expressed their desire for Jowie to be granted permission to attend his father’s burial, even under police supervision. Jowie’s lawyer highlighted the emotional and physical struggles the family endured during the trial, emphasizing the importance of allowing Jowie to pay his last respects.
Previously, Jowie’s family had publicly contested his death sentence, maintaining his innocence and planning to appeal the court’s decision. The case has been a significant source of distress for the family, further compounded by Mwangi’s illness and subsequent death.
