Agriculture Cabinet Secretary nominee Mutahi Kagwe has disclosed his wealth, pegged at Sh842 million, accumulated largely through real estate investments and land over several years. Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Kagwe spoke candidly about his financial standing, emphasizing the importance of long-term investments in securing wealth.
As part of his pitch for the Agriculture docket, Kagwe highlighted his vision to transform Kenya’s agricultural sector through enhanced communication. He proposed a comprehensive communication framework, leveraging both traditional and digital media to engage all stakeholders, including farmers, experts, and policymakers. This inclusive approach, he believes, will facilitate informed decision-making and ensure that the voices of those who own agricultural products are always heard.
Drawing from his previous experience as Health Cabinet Secretary during the Covid-19 pandemic, Kagwe acknowledged the power of media, particularly social media, in reaching the younger audience and keeping the public informed. However, he also noted the challenges posed by the negative aspects of digital platforms, cautioning that while they present vast opportunities, they also require careful management.
Kagwe expressed concern about the youth’s growing disinterest in agriculture, describing the sector as “boring” and “ordinary.” He emphasized that modernizing agriculture and integrating technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), is essential to attracting young people. Kagwe posed the question of whether the country is preparing future farmers to harness AI and compete globally, positioning technology as a crucial aspect of agriculture’s future.
With a focus on innovation and strategic communication, Kagwe aims to lead the charge in making agriculture an appealing and forward-looking sector for Kenya’s youth.
