Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa have issued a 7-day ultimatum to President William Ruto to address the growing wave of abductions in Kenya. Speaking during a rally in Kakamega, the leaders vowed to mobilize the nation for large-scale anti-government protests if their demands are not met.
The ultimatum comes amidst rising public concern over alleged human rights violations. The opposition figures called for the unconditional release of protestors arrested during demonstrations held earlier in the week. They also urged the United Nations to suspend Kenya’s membership in its Human Rights Council, citing the government’s alleged suppression of civil liberties.
“Listen to the cries of parents whose children have been abducted,” Eugene Wamalwa implored during his address in Mumias. “If these children are not returned to their families by next week, you will witness the mother of all demonstrations. Tuko tayari kurudi maandamano. Mumias mko tayari?” he asked the crowd, receiving resounding affirmation.
Kalonzo echoed Wamalwa’s sentiments, emphasizing the opposition’s commitment to achieving what he termed as the liberation of Kenya in 2025. “We promise the people of Mumias East, Kakamega, and all of Kenya that we will not back down. We are ready to fight for justice,” he asserted.
The leaders took issue with Kenya’s continued representation at the United Nations Human Rights Council, arguing that the country’s alleged failure to uphold basic human rights undermines its eligibility. “The other member nations should suspend Kenya. It is unacceptable for Kenya to have a seat on this council while it continues to violate the rights of its own citizens. Let those abducted be released immediately,” Kalonzo insisted.
The duo warned that should the demands be ignored, they would escalate the issue, including taking legal action. “We are giving a seven-day ultimatum. If by next Wednesday, the Inspector General of Police and President Ruto have not acted, we will show them what a people’s movement can achieve,” Wamalwa concluded.
This development intensifies the political pressure on President Ruto’s administration as the nation watches closely for the government’s response.
