Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared that the 2027 presidential race is his time to lead, emphasizing that others should step aside to pave the way for his candidacy. The former Vice President, who has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics for over two decades, underscored the sacrifices he has made in the past, notably stepping down in favor of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga three times in the previous elections.
In a recent interview with Mulembe Nation radio stations, Kalonzo was clear and firm in his position, stating, “I have waited for 20 years. There comes a time when even the world acknowledges that it is your time.” He added that he is now the strongest candidate to take on President William Ruto in 2027, making it clear that he will not support any other candidate in the upcoming race. His declaration could cause ripples within opposition circles as they seek to build a united front to challenge Ruto’s leadership.
Kalonzo’s remarks reflect a deep sense of frustration and a long-held belief in his leadership credentials. He reminded the public of his past sacrifices, explaining that stepping down for Raila in 2013, 2017, and 2022 was not a random decision, but rather the result of deep consultations and reflection. “Many have asked why I kept stepping aside. It wasn’t random—it was based on dialogue and careful analysis of potential outcomes,” he said.
His reflection goes back to 2002, when he withdrew from the presidential race to support Mwai Kibaki’s bid, which was a strategic decision that helped propel Kibaki to victory. Kalonzo’s commitment to the opposition and his role in previous alliances have been seen as noble by many, but the question of whether it is now his turn to lead remains a source of contention within the broader opposition coalition.
Currently, Kalonzo is working with a diverse group, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and others, to form a strong coalition for the 2027 elections. However, his insistence on running as the sole candidate could challenge efforts to unite the opposition, which has expressed a desire to field a single candidate against Ruto.
Kalonzo’s bold move to assert that it is now his time may shift the dynamics within the political landscape as the 2027 elections approach, with many watching closely to see if his call for unity and support will be met with agreement or division among the opposition leaders.
