Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has declared her intention to vie for the presidency in the 2027 general election, ruling out the possibility of deputizing any candidate. Speaking on Friday, the former Gichugu MP emphasized that the 2022 elections marked the end of her time as a running mate, stating she will only settle for the top seat going forward.
“To my friend Senator Daniel Karaba, at this level, I cannot become anyone’s deputy again,” Karua asserted. “If there’s any prayer you’re making, it should be for me to secure the presidency. I will ask for your vote and contest for the top position.”
Karua, who was Azimio la Umoja’s deputy presidential candidate in the 2022 elections, partnered with Raila Odinga in a bid to unseat President William Ruto. Despite losing, she actively campaigned across the country and maintained her commitment to the coalition’s agenda. However, Karua later exited Azimio after Raila began cooperating with President Ruto’s administration. The partnership reportedly sought to bolster Raila’s chances of becoming the next African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson.
Karua, who has a long history in politics, previously vied for the presidency in 2013, becoming one of the few women in Kenyan history to seek the nation’s highest office. Despite her loss, her resilience and leadership earned her national recognition. In 2017, she shifted her focus to local politics, contesting for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat but losing to Anne Waiguru.
As the 2027 elections approach, Karua reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening Kenya’s opposition. “I will continue working with like-minded individuals to ensure a robust opposition,” she noted.
Her candidacy is expected to reshape the political landscape, particularly in the Mt. Kenya region, where her influence remains significant. Karua’s declaration signals her readiness to chart an independent political path as she seeks to become Kenya’s first female president.
With the announcement, the seasoned politician has set the stage for what promises to be an intense and competitive election season.
