Two suspected robbers were shot and killed by police officers in Kasarani, Nairobi, following a failed robbery attempt in the Sunton area on Sunday morning, January 5, 2025. According to the police, the incident occurred after a man was attacked during the robbery attempt.
A police patrol team on duty in the area responded to cries for help, following a distress call from the victim. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers found three men attempting to rob the victim. The suspects, who were allegedly armed, attempted to flee when confronted by the officers, resulting in a brief chase.
Despite repeated warnings to surrender, the suspects continued to resist, with one of them reportedly wielding a homemade firearm. In response, a police officer opened fire, fatally wounding two of the men. One suspect, who managed to escape, was reportedly injured during the ordeal and fled towards the Shilanga area.
A subsequent search revealed a homemade pistol, capable of firing a single round, and a machete. The weapon was recovered by the officers. The bodies of the two deceased suspects were moved to the City Mortuary for postmortem examination and identification.
Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei expressed concern over the rising cases of violent robberies in the city. He emphasized that police have ramped up patrols and have arrested several individuals linked to these crimes. “We have increased patrols and taken other measures to combat this menace,” Bungei said. He also confirmed that some of the arrested suspects are already facing charges in court.
In a separate incident, a woman in Kerwa Town, Kiambu County, was questioned by police after she claimed to have killed an intruder who had forcefully entered her home. The deceased man was found in the woman’s house with multiple stab wounds to the chest. The woman stated that she had grabbed a kitchen knife in self-defense and stabbed the intruder after he broke into her home. The bloodied knife was recovered and kept as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Both incidents highlight the escalating concerns over safety and security in Nairobi and its surrounding areas. Authorities continue to investigate these cases and are taking steps to address rising crime rates.
