Starting January 2025, the cost of DNA testing at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) will see a price hike. The fee for the test, which was previously set at KSh 20,000, will now rise to KSh 27,000, marking an increase of KSh 7,000.
KEMRI announced the change in a public statement, expressing gratitude to their customers for their continued support. The statement reads, “We wish to inform our valued customers of a marginal price adjustment for the DNA Testing Service from Sh20,000 to Sh27,000 starting this January 2025. Thank you for your continued support.”
DNA testing is a crucial service provided by KEMRI through its Human DNA Identification Laboratory (HID), which is known for offering reliable and precise results. The test is essential for various applications, including legal cases such as paternity tests, criminal investigations, and personal knowledge.
One of the key factors driving the increase in price may be the rising costs associated with laboratory maintenance, research, and the implementation of advanced DNA testing technologies. KEMRI is dedicated to ensuring the accuracy and quality of the service, but the increase in cost reflects the need to meet these operational demands.
The DNA testing service is versatile, catering to different needs. While most tests are conducted using saliva samples, a variety of other materials can be used, depending on the situation. These may include blood, nails, bones, teeth, and hair, providing a range of options for individuals who may not have access to saliva or other common samples.
Whether for legal purposes or personal knowledge, the DNA test helps individuals in making important decisions, from establishing parentage to solving criminal cases. The price revision may impact customers, but it is a necessary step for KEMRI to maintain high-quality services while adapting to growing operational requirements.
As KEMRI moves into 2025 with this new fee structure, it remains a leading institution in Kenya for DNA analysis and genetic research.
