KEMRI Provides Free DNA Testing for Hillside Fire Victims

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is stepping up to support families affected by the tragic fire at Hillside Endarsha Academy, where a devastating blaze claimed the lives of 21 students. In an unprecedented move, KEMRI has announced that it will offer free DNA testing services to aid in the identification of the victims, a gesture aimed at providing closure to the grieving families.

On Friday night, a fire engulfed a boys’ dormitory at Hillside Endarsha Academy, leaving the bodies of the deceased burnt beyond recognition. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, with parents desperately seeking a way to identify their children amidst the charred remains.

In response to this dire situation, KEMRI Chairperson Abdulahi Ali announced on Tuesday that the institute will dispatch a team from its Human Identification Laboratory to assist in the identification process. Ali emphasized that KEMRI will cover all costs associated with the DNA testing services, demonstrating the institute’s commitment to supporting the affected families during this heartbreaking time.

“The experts from KEMRI’s Human Identification Laboratory will work in close collaboration with the multi-agency government task force, including the Government Chemist, to expedite the process of identifying the victims,” Ali said in a statement. “We understand the immense pain and distress that the families are going through, and we are dedicated to providing them with the assistance they need to find some measure of closure.”

The identification process began immediately, with KEMRI’s team starting the collection and analysis of DNA samples. On Wednesday, additional tissue samples from the victims are expected to be received following autopsies conducted by the chief Government Pathologist. This meticulous process is crucial for ensuring accurate identification, as the fire rendered many of the victims unrecognizable.

The decision to offer free DNA testing underscores KEMRI’s role as a leader in forensic identification and its commitment to public service. The institute’s Human Identification Laboratory is renowned for its advanced expertise in DNA testing and has a history of providing vital support during national and regional emergencies.

“The KEMRI laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technology and skilled professionals who are well-prepared to handle this sensitive and urgent task,” Ali stated. “Our involvement in this process highlights our dedication to supporting families in their time of need and underscores the importance of forensic science in disaster response.”

The tragedy at Hillside Endarsha Academy has left the community in mourning, and the provision of free DNA testing services by KEMRI is a beacon of hope for the affected families. By covering the cost of these essential services, KEMRI not only helps to identify the victims but also alleviates some of the financial burden on grieving families.

Parents of the victims have been asked to provide DNA samples to aid in the identification process. This collaborative effort between KEMRI and the government task force is vital in ensuring that the victims are properly identified and that their families can begin to heal from this profound loss.

As the identification process continues, KEMRI remains steadfast in its commitment to providing the necessary support to the families affected by this tragic event. The institute’s role in this crisis exemplifies its dedication to serving the public and reinforces its reputation as a leader in forensic and familial DNA testing.

“Our hearts go out to the grieving parents during this incredibly difficult time,” Ali concluded. “KEMRI is fully committed to assisting the families and helping them find the closure they need as we navigate through this tragedy together.”
