The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a major traffic disruption at the Haille Selassie Roundabout, effective from January 16 to February 20, 2025. The disruption, which will affect motorists along the Nairobi Southern Bypass, is due to scheduled roadworks aimed at constructing a pedestrian underpass in the area.
In its official communication, KeNHA emphasized that the works will necessitate changes to the usual traffic flow, with specific sections of the road affected. The construction of the pedestrian underpass, which is part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety, will involve significant alterations to road usage during the stated period.
Motorists have been urged to strictly follow the proposed traffic management plan, designed to mitigate congestion and facilitate smooth movement during the works. In addition, KeNHA is encouraging drivers to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed at the site. The authority assures the public that these measures are crucial to maintaining safety and minimizing disruptions during this period.
This traffic disruption follows an earlier announcement made in November 2024, which informed the public about similar disruptions due to roadworks for the construction of the pedestrian underpass. The previous closure, from November 28, 2024, to January 27, 2025, was part of an extended effort to improve road infrastructure in the area. It also included the rehabilitation of a weighbridge and pavements along the Southern Bypass, further enhancing the road’s functionality and safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.
KeNHA has also shared that the section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass between the Ole Sereni Interchange and Ngong Road Interchange, which had been closed for repairs from December 24, 2024, to January 5, 2025, has now been reopened. This closure was part of essential maintenance works that included bridge and pavement repairs.
As the construction of the pedestrian underpass begins, KeNHA reminds all road users to exercise caution, observe road signs, and adhere to speed limits for their safety and that of others. The authority further advises motorists to avoid speeding and instead focus on safe driving practices to ensure everyone’s well-being during this period of infrastructural enhancement.
