Kennedy Rapudo: From Aspiring Radio Presenter to Successful Entrepreneur

Kennedy Rapudo, Amber Ray’s partner, opened up about his journey from aspiring radio presenter to a successful entrepreneur. Rapudo shared candid details about his early aspirations, the influence of societal expectations, and the pivotal moments that shaped his career path.

Early Aspirations and Societal Pressures

Kennedy Rapudo’s journey began with the pressure to conform to societal expectations. “The villagers wanted me to be a teacher,” he revealed. “My neighbor back at home always insisted I must be a teacher, and I hated it. After form 4, he found me a teaching job, but after I joined campus, I did something else.” Despite this early pressure, Rapudo harbored a passion for radio.

The Dream of Radio and Financial Realities

Rapudo’s passion for radio was strong. “I wanted to be a radio presenter, but now I’m old,” he reflected. “I used to listen to BBC until I figured it does not pay well, and I wanted financial freedom.” His desire for financial stability ultimately led him to reconsider his career aspirations.

A Brief Aspiration to Medicine

In addition to his interest in radio, Rapudo once aspired to become a doctor. However, the untimely death of his mother caused him to lose focus. “I also wanted to become a doctor, but after my mum died, I lost focus. I decided to do what the world wanted me to be,” he shared.

Transition to Business and Entrepreneurship

Kennedy Rapudo’s journey took a significant turn when he decided to pursue a career in business. After earning a Master’s degree at the University of Nairobi, he began working with various oil companies, including TULO and Africa Oil. “We were doing research for them,” he explained. “After that, I went back to USIU to do my second Masters because I loved their programs.”

The Birth of an Entrepreneurial Spirit

Rapudo’s entrepreneurial journey began in earnest eight years ago. He started by operating multiple cars under Uber. “After that, I started working for a Dutch company, organizing tours for clients from the Netherlands,” he said. This role marked a significant shift in his career, providing him with valuable experience in the travel industry.

Overcoming Challenges and Starting Anew

The COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges to the company Rapudo worked for, but it also presented an opportunity for him to start his own tour company. “After the pandemic ravaged the company, I decided to start my own tour company,” he stated. This move allowed Rapudo to leverage his experience and connections to build a successful business.

Supporting His Children’s Dreams

Rapudo’s journey has also influenced his approach to parenting. He is committed to supporting his children in their pursuits, regardless of how unconventional they may seem. “My son once told me he wants to be a chef; he later changed and said he wanted to be a bus conductor,” Rapudo shared. “My daughter wants to own a salon. Even if she told me she wants to be a hair stylist, I would support her. My job is not to tell her she is wrong; I am there to support them.”

Conclusion

Kennedy Rapudo’s story is a testament to the importance of adaptability and resilience. From his early dreams of becoming a radio presenter to his successful career in business, Rapudo has navigated the complexities of life with determination and an open mind. His journey underscores the value of pursuing one’s passions while remaining open to new opportunities and the importance of supporting the aspirations of the next generation.
