Kenya Airways (KQ) has donated a Boeing 737 aircraft to Mang’u High School, marking a significant milestone in the school’s journey to enhance aviation studies. The ceremony, which was held at the school, was attended by various dignitaries, including the school’s Chief Principal John Kuria, Archbishop Rev. Philip Anyolo, Dr. Wilfred Kiboro, KQ’s Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer Hellen Mathuka, and members of the Mang’u alumni and student body.
The process of acquiring the aircraft began over three years ago, with Principal John Kuria expressing his excitement and gratitude for the gift. He emphasized that the Boeing 737 will play a vital role in promoting aviation education at the school, offering students practical insights into the Kenyan and global aviation markets. “This aircraft is going to promote aviation studies, and we are going to train these young people about the aviation market,” said Kuria.
Kenya Airways, in a statement, noted that the donation is part of its broader effort to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals. By providing Mang’u High School with the decommissioned Boeing 737-700, the airline aims to enhance the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and fuel students’ passion for careers in aviation.
The donation also reflects KQ’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), with the aircraft set to offer students hands-on experience in aviation mechanics, operations, and management. Dr. Wilfred Kiboro, Chair of Nation Media Group, lauded the partnership, underscoring the importance of such initiatives in empowering students with practical skills.
The handover of the aircraft comes just over a year after the Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, officially handed over the decommissioned aircraft to the school. Murkomen highlighted the significant role the aircraft would play in shaping students’ careers, particularly within the growing aviation industry.
This generous donation from Kenya Airways marks a turning point in aviation education in Kenya and promises to equip Mang’u students with the knowledge and skills required to pursue careers in the aviation sector.
